Electoral College—Now, More Than Ever

Abstract

The recent presidential election raised great concerns, disbelief, and even outrage, that a popular vote would not determine the new president elect. The Electoral College provision of the U.S. Constitution which had uneventfully operated in every presidential election suddenly raised opponents to its operation. Professor Sutton discusses why the Electoral College is still being debated, the Founders’ debate over representative democracy, and how the numbers played out in the Electoral College versus the popular vote in the 2000 presidential election.
